Crystal Clear Visibility Is Critical To Driving Safely All Year Around

While bad weather, errant drivers and hazardous road conditions are rarely in our control, driving safety often is – especially when it is related to vehicle maintenance. Time and again, statistics have shown that poor vehicle maintenance can often be the cause of road accidents, yet motorists tend to neglect some of the most crucial – even inexpensive – maintenance items on their vehicles.

Take for example, the 'humble' windshield wiper – a relatively inexpensive and easy-to-install item. Yet statistics from vehicle inspections conducted during a recent National Car Care Month, indicate that 17 percent (nearly one-fifth) of the vehicles that passed through the check lanes, had front windshield wiper failures and 12 percent needed service on their rear windshield wipers and/or washers.

Committed to promoting driving safety by enhancing visibility all around the vehicle, Robert Bosch LLC, a pioneer and innovator in wiper blade technology for over 75 years, recently upgraded its entire portfolio of premium windshield wiper blades to best serve all motorists. Bosch's new wiper blade portfolio includes Bosch ICON™ bracketless blade, Bosch Excel+, Bosch MicroEdge and Bosch HINDSIGHT,™ a wiper blade for the rear windshield.

“While it is always important to be able to see clearly while driving, it is particularly so in bad weather,” said Otto Stefaner, Group Product Manager, Wiper Systems for Bosch. “A worn out blade on either the front or rear windshield can result in severe streaking and can obstruct a driver’s vision."

It is important to remember that front and rear windshield wipers are both subject to the same damaging effects of temperature extremes, ozone and road chemicals, no matter how frequently – or infrequently – they are used. In fact, infrequent use actually decreases a blade's service life by diminishing the flexibility of the wiping element.

"Motorists who have driven in bad weather such as heavy snow, rain or blowing dust, know how quickly these conditions can reduce visibility and compromise safety," said Stefaner. "You can make a noticeable improvement simply by replacing worn out wiper blades with new premium-grade blades designed for all-season performance."

The new Bosch wiper blade portfolio addresses the needs of a variety of motorists – ranging from the latest in ' bracketless' blades for those looking for cutting-edge technology to wipers for the rear windshield.

Bosch ICON™ Bracketless Blade Bosch, which is the world’s largest supplier of bracketless wiper blades to vehicle manufacturers, recently introduced Bosch ICON to the aftermarket. Bosch ICON is a new ultra performance, bracketless wiper blade for the front windshield. Its design is based on Bosch’s highly advanced OE (original equipment) blade, the Aerotwin, which was introduced in 1999. With over 33 million bracketless blades installed on new vehicles in Europe and North America, ICON bracketless blades bring the same proven wiping performance to the aftermarket.

The ICON bracketless blade features a unique design which combines dual rubber technology, an exclusive weather shield connector system and an integrated aerodynamic wind spoiler. The enclosed steel tension springs prevent the steel brackets and joints from being exposed preventing snow and ice build-up resulting in a clean and perfect wipe with no missed spots or streaks throughout the year.

Air flow over the wind spoiler creates a down-force, which applies exceptional uniform pressure along the entire length of the dual rubber wiping element, helping it to hug the windshield more uniformly even in severe wind or at highway speed. Plus the exclusive fx dual-rubber compound reduces 'chatter' and makes for a longer performance life. The Bosch ICON offers up to 20 percent longer life than other premium wiper blades.

According to Stefaner, 35 percent of new European vehicles are currently equipped with bracketless blades and it is estimated that 40 percent of new U.S. domestic vehicles will be equipped as well by 2010. Bracketless wiper blades will forever improve driver visibility in snow, mist, drizzle and heavy rain, Stefaner said.

Bosch ICON aftermarket wiper blade represents an upgrade for most vehicles that are currently equipped with conventional blades. The correct fit for a vehicle is based on a combination of the blade length and the curvature of the windshield. Bosch recommends, consulting the catalog for the exact part number for any application.

Excel+ Wiper Blade Also included in the new upgraded wiper blade portfolio, is the Bosch Excel+ wiper blade which cleans windshields better and lasts longer than ever before. Its exclusive dual rubber compound with a fully-enclosed metal tension spring, housed in an aerodynamic heavy gauge steel frame results in less streaking and unmatched resistance to wear from weather and corrosive elements. Plus, it features Bosch's exclusive DirectConnect™ one-step installation procedure that requires no adapters and covers most vehicle makes and models.

Bosch Micro Edge Wiper Blade Bosch Micro Edge Wiper Blade is designed for dependable wiping performance. Every blade incorporates a fully-enclosed metal tension spring and a specially-blended precision cut natural rubber wiping element. That means premium wiping performance and crystal clear visibility for safer driving. Plus, the exclusive Bosch DirectConnect™ system makes installation quick and easy.

HINDSIGHT™ – For the Rear Windshield Bosch's commitment to improving roadside safety by enhancing visibility both at the front and rear of the vehicle has led to the development of the HINDSIGHT a wiper blade for the rear windshield.

"The rear windshield, especially on station wagons, minivans and SUVs, can turn into a real safety hazard when neglected," according to Stefaner. “Just like the front windshield wipers, rear wipers, too, may skip or make a squeaking sound when worn out or damaged, which besides hurting visibility can also permanently damage the windshield.”

Standard features of the Bosch Hindsight rear windshield wiper blade include: • A steel frame that prolongs service life and offers consistent wiping performance during snow, rain, mist and drizzle • A precision-cut natural rubber wiping edge that removes the smallest droplets to provide crystal clear visibility and enhance safety • Similar to Bosch wiper systems for the front windshield, the “Hindsight” rear windshield wiper also uses Bosch’s DirectConnect™ installation system • An enclosed metal tension spring which, besides applying direct pressure to the wiping edge for better moisture removal, offers better protection against water, snow or ice buildup for consistent all-season wiping performance.

Recent research indicates that most drivers tend to put replacement of rear wiper blades fairly low on their list of automotive maintenance items; current perception being that the rear wiper blade is used less frequently and, therefore, can be replaced at much longer intervals than front wipers, without compromising safety – a crucial error in perception, Stefaner emphasized.

Bosch Developed First Electric Wiper System A pioneer and innovator in automotive technology, Bosch has been a leader in windshield wiper systems for more than 75 years. Bosch developed the first electric windshield wiper system in 1926, and has been responsible for many new developments in wiper technology, including the first intermittent windshield wiper in 1971 and the two-component wiper blade element in 1994.

Today, Bosch operates the world's largest windshield wiper factory in Tienen, Belgium. This facility produces 350,000 windshield wipers every day, and manufactures 700 different types of blades. In 1999, Bosch introduced the Aerotwin “ bracketless” blade for new vehicle applications.

Wiper Blade Maintenance

“Both front and rear wipers are equally important service items that need to be checked and changed periodically,” said Otto Stefaner, Group Product Manager, Wiper Systems for Bosch. “For best results, Bosch recommends replacing them every spring and fall.” Additionally, wipers work in concert with the washer fluid to help keep the windshield – front and rear – clean while driving. Some cars have two reservoirs, one located in front under the hood and one located in the back for the rear washer. Check the owner’s manual to find the locations of the reservoirs and keep them full, especially during the winter months.
